The Risk of Melting Snow to Your Home

The end of January in Connecticut is typically when the winter snow begins to thaw and although it is a sign that spring is on the way, melting snow, particularly if it is a quick thaw, can also cause significant damage to property. Although your CT homeowners insurance may cover some types of water damage, it is a good idea to be aware of what to look out for as the thaw hits.
Here are some of the problems that can be caused by melting snow:
• Flooding on lower parts of the property, particularly basements
• Mold and long term water-related issues
• Blocked drains
• Ice dams on roof and gutters which can prevent water draining and cause damage to walls and ceilings
• Attic condensation caused by leaky roofs and ice dams

Once temperatures begin to rise, it is a good idea to keep an eye on your property for signs of leakage or water damage. Take immediate action if you find anything amiss as quick attention to problems could help to prevent minor issues having serious long term (and costly!) effects on your property.
